  1. Two US space probes to Mars, each one
  2. consisting of an orbiter and a lander. They
  3. were launched 20 Aug and 9 Sept 1975. They
  4. transmitted colour pictures, and analysed the
  5. soil. The Viking 1 lander touched down in the
  6. Chryse lowland area 20 July 1976; Viking 2
  7. landed in Utopia 3 Sept 1976. Viking 1
  8. carried life detection labs and landed on 20
  9. July 1976 for detailed research and photos.
  10. Designed to work for 90 days, it operated for
  11. six and a half years, going silent in Nov
  12. 1982. Viking 2 was similar in set up to
  13. Viking 1; it landed on Mars 3 Sept 1976 and
  14. functioned for three and a half years.
