Two US space probes to Mars, each one
consisting of an orbiter and a lander. They
were launched 20 Aug and 9 Sept 1975. They
transmitted colour pictures, and analysed the
soil. The Viking 1 lander touched down in the
Chryse lowland area 20 July 1976; Viking 2
landed in Utopia 3 Sept 1976. Viking 1
carried life detection labs and landed on 20
July 1976 for detailed research and photos.
Designed to work for 90 days, it operated for
six and a half years, going silent in Nov
1982. Viking 2 was similar in set up to
Viking 1; it landed on Mars 3 Sept 1976 and
functioned for three and a half years.
